The Siamese algae eating fish, also known as the Siamese flying fox or Siamese fox, scientific name Crossocheilus siamensis, is a cyprinid fish native to the flowing waters of Thailand and the Malay Peninsula.
It is the only fish species known to eat red algae and was introduced to Europe in 1962. It was not until the 1970s that it became widely popular due to its algal eating habits.
The Siamese algae eating fish is a slender, grayish brown fish with clear black stripes, about 15 centimeters in length. It can grow to this size in about two years and can survive for more than ten years.
All of its fins are transparent or slightly milky white, with no red or yellow luster on them. The black stripes have serrated edges that extend from the nose to the fork of the tail fin. When under pressure or fighting, the color of black stripes will significantly fade.
The lower half of the fish body is silver white, with no bright stripes on the black stripes, but the entire upper half is brown and each scale has dark edges, making the upper half look like a net.
Under the black stripes, some black edges of scales may be visible. There is a pair of slender, forward extending tentacles, but they may press against the cheeks when swimming or resting.
Siamese algae eating fish have a mild personality and can be mixed with other mild fish. They mainly feed on algae, especially red algae, and also consume moss algae in aquariums. Suitable for living in weakly acidic soft water with a water temperature of 20-25 ℃ and a pH value of 6-8.
